Cysts are pockets of tissue that can be filled with fluid, skin cells or other material. They are noncancerous.

Cysts can occur anywhere on the surface of the body. They can feel like a large pea-sized lump under the surface. They can develop as the result of infections, clogged oil glands, or based on a genetic tendency. They are usually painless unless they become infected, inflamed or rupture. Cysts are normally slow-growing.

  • Incision and Drainage: Draining the cyst by piercing with a sterile scalpel
  • Injection: A cortisone injection into the cyst may be required if it is inflamed. The medication works within a few days, decreasing the inflammation.
  • Surgery: Surgical removal is often the preferred method for treating cysts.
