What You Should Know About Collagen Induction Therapy
Collagen Induction Therapy, sometimes called “microneedling,” is a treatment that improves the appearance of age-related fine lines and wrinkles as well as scars such as those resulting from acne. The procedure can be used on the face, except within the orbital rim, and elsewhere on the body.
Conditions That Can Be Treated by CIT
- Acne scarring
- Fine lines
- Loose skin
- Pore size
- Brown spots
- Stretch marks
- Pigment issues
South Shore Skin Center uses SkinPen© by Bellus Medical exclusively. It is the first microneedling device cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, clinically proven to be safe and effective.
Growth Factor Serum
We also feature and recommend the addition of Epidermal Growth Factor serum during CIT treatments to further stimulate the production of collagen. Growth factors are proteins that stimulate the skin to rejuvenate. They tell new skin cells to form, encourage new blood vessels, and stimulate collagen synthesis. However, Growth factors are large proteins that aren’t likely to penetrate intact skin. Therefore, growth factors should be used when the micro-channels are open, allowing growth factors to penetrate the dermal tissues instead of sitting on top of the skin’s surface. Growth factor serum combined with microneedling can produce quite remarkable results.

How To Reduce Acne Scarring
scars are usually the result of inflamed blemishes caused by skin pores
engorged with excess oil, dead skin cells and bacteria. The pore swells,
causing a break in the follicle wall. Shallow lesions are usually minor and
heal quickly. But if there is a deep break in the wall of the pore, infected
material can spill out into surrounding tissue, creating deeper lesions. The
skin attempts to repair these lesions by forming new collagen fibers. These
repairs usually aren’t as smooth and flawless as the original skin.*
Why treat acne scarring?
There are several physical, emotional and social reasons for treating acne scars. Some of these include improved appearance; enhanced self-esteem, and promotion of better skin health.
There are two main types of acne scars:
- Hypertrophic or Keloid Scarring – These scars are caused when the body produces too much collagen as acne wounds heal, resulting in a mass of raised tissue on the skin’s surface.
- Atrophic or Depressed Scarring –These scars develop when there is a loss of tissue. There are two common types of atrophic scarring. “Icepick” scars are usually small, yet obvious holes in the skin. “Boxcar” scars are depressed areas, usually round or oval in shape with steeply angled sides, similar to chickenpox scars.
Collagen Induction Therapy Can Reduce Acne Scarring
Collagen Induction Therapy, employing microneedling, helps reduce the depth of acne scars. It is a safe treatment that works for all skin tones. Skin needling, as the name suggests, delivers needles of varying depths (0.5 to 3 mm) into the dermal layers of the skin. the needling breaks down scar tissue and stimulates the formation of new collagen. To reduce acne scarring, South Shore Skin Center uses SkinPen© by Bellus Medical exclusively. It is the first microneedling device cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, clinically proven to be safe and effective.
